Speaking at a two-day workshop for agricultural extension workers in Minna, Niger State, the Executive Director (ED) of WEP Ms. Priscilla Achakpa said the workshop was necessitated following a document produced on climate change by the Ministry of Environment.
Achakpa said the best way to reach out to farmers with information on climate change was by developing the capacities of extension workers on how to communicate climate change information to rural farmers, particularly women.
She said, “the best way to reach farmers with climate change information is by developing capacities of agricultural extension service officers on how to interpret and communicate climate change information to rural farmers, including women.”
Achakpa also urged the various state ministries of environment to partner with Nigerian Metrological Agency for weather forecast through which farmers; particularly the rural farmers, can improve on their agricultural output.
Declaring the workshop open, the Commissioner of Agriculture, Ahmed Matane, commended the effort of the Federal Ministry of Environment for promoting agriculture in the state, saying that the source of livelihood for 70-80 percent of the state’s population is through agriculture.
