Climate Change: Women Green Initiative Donates Trees to Communities

The female academic staff of Faculty of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, under auspices of Rural Urban Women Green Initiative have organised tree planting campaign and donated 400 seedlings to Ruda Yausa and Gubi villages, the host communities of the University.
Speaking at the occasion, the Chairperson of the initiative, Professor Khadijah M. Bello, said the exercise was part of efforts to reduce the negative impact of climate change.
She said, “We are struggling with a lot of issues that have to do with degradation of the environment because of human activities such as indiscriminate bush burning. As part of efforts to reduce the negative impact of climate change, we have embarked on tree planting campaign, targeting our host communities.”
Bello further stated that the 400 seedlings distributed comprised 200 non-economic trees and 200 economic trees including mango, cashew, guava and orange.

“We are distributing 200 non-economic trees and 200 economic trees to our host communities here in Gubi (campus) and we will expand the exercise to Yalwa campus of the University.”
She urged the beneficiaries to take good care of the trees in order to reap their full benefits.
Also speaking at the event, the (Acting) Vice Chancellor of ATBU, Prof Sani Usman Kunya, represented by the Dean Faculty of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology, Prof. AA Amba, expressed dismay over the continuous illegal felling of trees, warning people to desist from the act because of the threats it posses to the environment.
He, however, commended the tree planting initiative, calling for the sustainability of the project.
