The Yobe State Government has inaugurated a committee on tree planting and environmental hazards as part of efforts to combat desertification and restore the ecosystem.

Governor Mai Buni, who inaugurated the committee in Damaturu, stated that the move was part of a massive tree-planting campaign to be launched throughout the state.

He added that no fewer than 3,000 seedlings would be allocated to each local government area in addition to seedlings for household planting, with a target of two million seedlings in the first phase.

The committee, chaired by Deputy Governor, Idi Gubana, is expected to begin work within one week to take advantage of the August planting season.

He said that sub-committees will be set up for site identification, land clearing, ploughing, treatment, and distribution of about 50,000 seedlings already secured for the exercise.

The governor disclosed that the tree-planting campaign would commence in Damaturu on August 27, 2025, and extend to the 17 local government areas on August 29, 2025.
