The Yobe State Government has intensified efforts to reform its waste management system as part of measures to improve sanitation and promote sustainable urban development.
The move follows a stakeholder dissemination meeting on a Solid Waste Management Study convened by the Ministry of Environment in collaboration with the Solutions for Internally Displaced Persons and Host Communities (SOLID) Project in Damaturu.
The meeting, which held at Government House in Damaturu, brought together representatives of ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs), local government councils, private sector operators, civil society organisations and community leaders.
Officials said the forum reviewed and validated findings from a comprehensive assessment of waste management practices in the Damaturu metropolis.
Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Environment Hon. Sidi Yakubu Karasuwa, said the administration of Governor Mai Mala Buni is committed to building a cleaner and healthier state.
He noted that the study provides a solid, evidence-based framework for improving waste collection, transportation and disposal systems.
Earlier, the SOLID Project Coordinator, Mr. Suleiman Dauda, said the study was carried out in response to increasing pressure on environmental services due to rapid urbanisation.
He added that the findings identified gaps in infrastructure, coordination and service coverage, while also outlining practical steps for developing an integrated waste management system.
The state government said it would translate the study’s recommendations into policies and investments aimed at improving sanitation, safeguarding public health and creating economic opportunities.
