The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has condemned an incident involving Hausa traders at a livestock market in Ekpoma, Edo State, calling on authorities to investigate the matter and ensure justice for those affected.

The group said it received reports alleging that some traders of Hausa extraction were forced to flee the market following unrest in the area, during which livestock were reportedly harmed or lost. CNG warned that unresolved incidents of this nature could heighten inter-communal tensions.

In a statement issued by its National Coordinator, Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, the group said the reported incident occurred after the killing of a local youth by individuals described as suspected kidnappers.

While acknowledging the grief and anger that often follow such tragedies, the group stressed that, in its view, reprisals against traders who were not involved were unjustified.

“We received reports that some of our traders fled the market in fear, leaving behind their livestock, while further damage was allegedly done,” Charanchi said.

“If these reports are accurate, such actions undermine peaceful coexistence and the shared economic life of the community.”

Charanchi emphasised that the Hausa community, like all ethnic groups in Nigeria, is entitled to safety and equal protection under the law.

“Every Nigerian, regardless of ethnic background, has the right to live and work in any part of the country without fear,” he said.

“Communities that have coexisted peacefully for generations should not allow isolated criminal acts to create wider divisions.”

The group appealed to the Edo State Government to investigate the incident and take appropriate steps to prevent further escalation.

“We call on the Edo State Government to look into this matter thoroughly and take steps that will reassure all residents that their safety and livelihoods are protected,” Charanchi said.

CNG also urged authorities to consider support measures for traders who reportedly suffered losses.

“For those who may have lost their livestock, restitution or assistance should be considered as part of efforts to restore confidence and promote reconciliation,” he added.

The group said it was encouraging calm among its members and would engage community leaders and other stakeholders to promote dialogue and understanding.

“We remain committed to peaceful engagement and constructive dialogue,” Charanchi said.

“We call on all stakeholders to reject violence and work together toward solutions that respect the dignity and rights of every Nigerian.”
