Super Eagles’ Head Coach Eric Sekou Chelle is the man of the moment because some countries and top European clubs are said to be chasing after his signature. This is no doubt as a result of the improved performances of the Nigerian senior national team at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, where the former African champions finished third for a record ninth time.

Considering that they had underperformed during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, only a few incurable optimists gave them any chance of reaching the last four of the competition. However, under the guidance of the Franco-Malian tactician, the Super Eagles displayed a renewed attacking intensity and defensive solidity that captivated many. Had they held their nerves against the hosts, Morocco in one of the semi-finals, surely the Super Eagles would have reached the final and possibly returned home as champions of Africa for the fourth time.

Although finishing third at the AFCON didn’t reflect the huge potential of the Super Eagles, many Nigerians agreed that the players had indeed tried to atone for the failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. Therefore, many openly concluded that the team didn’t fail, even as the prestigious AFCON trophy eluded the Super Eagles again. Still, others said that after the runners-up at the delayed 2023 edition in Cote d’Ivoire, victory in Morocco would have been more soothing.

Anyway, it is this acclaimed ‘success’ in Morocco by the Super Eagles that has made their coach one of the hottest properties in world football. In fact, apart from African countries like Angola and Tunisia that are said to be running after Chelle with attractive offers, even former European champions, Olympique Marseille, are said to be in the race to sign the former coach of Mali. If these reports are not fabricated by propaganda merchants, then the coach has definitely found a dependable launch pad in the Super Eagles.

When he was appointed as the head coach of the Super Eagles on January 7, 2025, Chelle expressed a profound sense of pride and a lifelong connection to the team as he also described the opportunity as “something huge” and a “great source of pride – beyond words.” He also revealed that he had been a genuine supporter of the team for years, even recalling that he bought Nigerian shirts during the 1998 World Cup. Despite the euphoria, he was aware of the fact that he would be under constant pressure from over 230 million Nigerians to deliver positive results, yet he showed no nerves.

Even as he wasn’t popular with a section of the Nigerian football fans who wanted a ‘world-class’ coach for their team, Chelle hasn’t done too badly. Although he took over the team when the campaign for the 2026 World Cup ticket was badly damaged by Jose Peseiro and Finidi George, he managed to reset the team to keep hope alive till the last day. His scorecard in one year shows that in 19 matches, he won 12, drew five and lost only two, with his team scoring 36 and conceding 15 goals. This means that his tenure is characterised by a high-scoring offence and tactical discipline, which portends a bright future.

It is against this background of remarkable improvement that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is willing to extend Chelle’s contract beyond 2027. In a recent interview, the president of the NFF, Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau, said categorically that the coach was bound to Nigeria by an existing contract. He said, “We still have a one-year contract with Eric. Therefore, whatever interest anyone shows in him, he has to wait until his contract expires.”

He further said the football federation was prepared to protect the coach from distractions, pointing to his strong bond with the Super Eagles. “Basically, we don’t want him to have any distraction because we understand that he loves working with Nigeria,” Gusau said.

Of course, the coach has never hidden his love for anything Nigerian. However, as a professional who is also ambitious, it will be difficult to tie him down completely when he has higher goals he wants to achieve. Only recently, he announced that his ultimate ambition was to coach one of the most successful clubs in European football: Real Madrid. When he made the declaration, many doubted him, but that is his personal dream, which he hopes to pursue and possibly achieve.

So, after making significant progress in his career using the platform provided by Nigeria, Chelle is beginning to dream big, but he must tread cautiously. While reiterating NFF’s interest in the services of the coach, Gusau said something very profound and instructive. He highlighted the fact that not every team or country can boast of the quality of players that make up the Super Eagles. By this, he wants Chelle not to overrate his technical abilities, but stay humble because whatever he has become or achieved was made possible by the prodigious talents in his team.

Personally, I am happy that even as Chelle arrived in Nigeria unheralded. he has successfully turned the scepticism that greeted his arrival into positive energy, making himself a manager who is attractive to many suitors. Today, even Nigerians who are difficult to satisfy are clamouring that he should be retained by the NFF.

Only a few people gave Chelle a chance to survive with the Super Eagles, but he gallantly rose above all human limitations to set himself on the path of prosperity in his chosen career. This is exactly what audacity, courage and confidence can give when one comes face-to-face with a daunting challenge

However, it is still important for the man of the moment to be more realistic when talking about his plans. He shouldn’t attempt to bite off more than he can chew. Despite his successful outing with the Super Eagles, Chelle must stay humble to appreciate the fact that he still has a lot to do before he would be ranked among the world’s best. If he is too quick to think that he has arrived, he would be courting serious trouble because players like Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Calvin Bassey, Alex Iwobi, Adams Akor, Wilfred Ndidi and Samuel Chukwueze are scarce commodities. A national team like the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia or the Palacans Negras of Angola may not afford them. A word is enough for the wise.
