Siasia’s team’s next run out will be against Spain tomorrow, and he made it clear at the post-match interview that changes were required against the Europeans, who put eight goals past Tahiti in the group’s second game.

 “There’s a long way to go and we’ll sit down, watch the match again and see what things we need to change for the Spain game,” he said. Venezuela were the better team in the first half and the Nigeria coach admitted his side were lucky to have conceded just once

“Venezuela had a lot of chances in the first half, and when you give away so many you’re bound to concede a goal. In fact we were lucky it was only one. We improved in the second half but it wasn’t enough. We didn’t stick to our gameplan, but the first game is always difficult.”

 However, Siasia can take consolation from seeing his team completely dominate a one-sided second half, despite being one man short after midfielder Lukman Haruna was sent off for a stamp.
