Coalition of Education Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) has called on the Kaduna State government and the society in general to give maximum support and attention to girl-child education.
The coalition made the call in Kaduna during the commemoration of the International Day of the Girl Child in collaboration with Education Sector Support Programme in Nigeria (ESSPIN) and State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Kaduna State.
Speaking on behalf of the coalition, Christopher C. Chukwu of Gender Champion said though they have special interest in protecting girl-child education, they also do much for the boys in the area of education and other vital areas.
“Coalition of Education Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) has helped children educationally, both boys and girls. Most of our programmes and initiatives have impacted positively on the society. But sometimes, we target the girl-child because they are mostly neglected in the area of education. If you are in some of our communities, you will see that many girls are out of school. They are seen hawking on the streets during school hours and it is a thing of concern to us.
“Often, we reach out to their parents to know the reason why their daughters are out of school. We then assist to get them back to school, especially if the reasons are due to finance, books, uniforms and other related issues,” he said.
He urged government to put in place strong legislation that will encourage girl-child education, adding that girls too must also ensure that they insist on going to school than hawking and doing other jobs.
The theme of this year’s International Day of the Girl-Child is ‘The Power of Adolescent Girl: Vision 2030’.
