The Coalition of Civil Society Organizations for Good Governance (CCSO-GG) has commended the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, for what it describes as remarkable transformation and record-setting achievements under his leadership.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, the National Secretary of the coalition, Dr. Abdulkadir Shuaibu, said the NCS has become “a shining example of what is possible with visionary leadership, strategic innovation, and unwavering dedication.”
He said Adeniyi assumed office with a complex mandate that included enhancing revenue generation, combating smuggling, facilitating legitimate trade, and restoring public confidence in the Service. “Today, the results speak for themselves,” he added.
Shuaibu noted that the Service has consistently surpassed revenue targets, setting new collection records through improved efficiency, automation, and the blocking of revenue leakages—measures that have widened the tax net and boosted national earnings.
He highlighted what he described as a sustained, intelligence-driven crackdown on smuggling, which has resulted in significant seizures of prohibited items such as arms, ammunition, illicit drugs, and substandard products — efforts he said have strengthened national security and protected local industries.
The coalition also praised Adeniyi’s commitment to enhancing the ease of doing business through technology-driven reforms, simplified clearance procedures, and the implementation of the Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) programme, all of which have reduced cargo clearance times and improved port competitiveness.
Shuaibu said officer welfare and professional development have also been prioritised, contributing to renewed integrity and commitment within the ranks.
On collaboration and public engagement, he said Adeniyi has fostered stronger ties with other security agencies while maintaining open communication with stakeholders and the media, which has enhanced public trust in the Service.
He also singled out Comptroller Dalhatu Abubakar, Area Controller of the Kano/Jigawa Command, for what he described as exemplary performance aligned with the CG’s leadership ethos.
“Adeniyi has redefined the limits of what is possible within a government agency,” Shuaibu said, urging officers and leadership of the Service to sustain the momentum.
“This is the path to a more secure, prosperous, and economically vibrant Nigeria. The nation is watching, and we are immensely proud.”
