A coalition of Nigerians in the United States has responded to recent remarks by US lawmaker Kimberly Daniels regarding Nigeria’s Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, calling for a more measured and informed approach to discussions about Nigeria’s security leadership.

Operating under the banner of the Nigerian-American Coalition for Strategic Stability (NACSS), the group said external commentary on Nigeria’s internal security matters should reflect a deeper understanding of the country’s complex challenges.

In a statement issued on Thursday and signed by its convener, Dr Maxwell Akarachi, the coalition cautioned against narratives that may oversimplify Nigeria’s security situation or attribute it to individual office holders.

“It is important that commentary on Nigeria’s security landscape takes into account the full range of factors involved, including historical and structural challenges,” Akarachi said.

The group noted that security issues in parts of the country, particularly in the north-central and north-west regions, are shaped by longstanding vulnerabilities, cross-border criminal networks, and evolving threats.

According to the statement, addressing these challenges requires a broad, coordinated approach rather than focusing on specific individuals.

“Efforts to strengthen security should be viewed within the context of ongoing institutional reforms and collaboration among various stakeholders,” Akarachi said.

The coalition stated that since his appointment under the administration of President Bola Tinubu, Matawalle has been part of initiatives aimed at enhancing military operations, improving intelligence sharing, and stabilising affected regions.

While acknowledging that security concerns persist, the group pointed to reported progress in efforts to contain armed groups and restore access to previously affected communities.

Akarachi also highlighted the importance of responsible engagement by international partners when addressing Nigeria’s internal affairs.

“When foreign stakeholders comment on domestic issues, it is helpful that such engagement is grounded in accurate information and a comprehensive understanding of the situation,” he said.

The coalition emphasised that accountability within Nigeria’s security sector should continue through established legal and institutional frameworks.

“We welcome global partnerships, but such partnerships must be grounded in respect, accuracy, and a shared commitment to practical solutions,” Akarachi added.

It further called on Nigerians at home and in the diaspora to support constructive dialogue and collaboration in addressing the country’s security challenges.

“Addressing these issues requires unity, resilience, and sustained institutional efforts,” the statement said.
