A coalition of youth leaders and regional stakeholder groups from across the country has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to re-engage former Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd.), for a strategic national security assignment.

The appeal was contained in a communiqué jointly signed by Dr. Kennedy Tonjo West, President of the Movement for the Survival of Izon Ethnic Nationality in the Niger Delta (MOSIEND), and Comrade Isaac Oweicho of the National Coalition of Youth and Regional Stakeholder Organisations.

The document followed a meeting involving several major youth platforms, including the Niger Delta Youth Coalition for Peace and Progress, Northern Youth Alliance for Sustainable Security and Development, Middle Belt Youths for Poverty Eradication and the Northern Youth Peace Movement.

The coalition expressed concern over Gen. Musa’s retirement in October, noting that many young people viewed his leadership as instrumental in stabilising various conflict-prone areas.

“Our position is that Nigeria requires strong and coordinated security leadership at this time,” the communiqué stated.

The groups outlined several recommendations aimed at addressing emerging security challenges. These include the establishment of a legal and policy framework for state police, re-vetting of military personnel, stronger consequences for violent criminal activities, deployment of advanced technology, improved local intelligence networks, and the convening of a national security emergency forum.

The coalition also urged the President to consider assigning Gen. Musa a specialised role to support coordination within the country’s security architecture and enhance inter-agency collaboration.

They said President Tinubu has a record of appointing individuals with proven capacity, adding that the former defence chief could contribute meaningfully if brought back into the system.

According to the statement, Nigeria faces significant security pressures and would benefit from experienced hands to reinforce ongoing efforts.

The groups appealed for swift action from the Presidency, saying the country requires urgent and sustained measures to address rising security concerns.
