Eating cocoyam boosts immunity and supplies the body the nutrients that prevent diabetes and COVID-19, the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC) has said.
The RMRDC’s Director General Prof Ibrahim Hussaini Doko disclosed this at the launch of a book, ‘ Cocoyam: A crop of choice for nutrition and management of diabetes mellitus’ in Abuja on Thursday.

Doko who was represented by the director of industrial extension services at the agency, Dr Bola Olugbemi, said cocoyam contains glycerin and eating it, especially with palm oil or groundnut keep the sugar level in the body at bay.
“Eating cocoyam has many health benefits, one of which is that it prevents diabetes. It also reduces the risk of contracting COVID-19. Cocoyam contains glycerin which doesn’t metabolize as sugar in the body and doesn’t cause a rise in blood sugar”, Doko said.
The RMRDC DG added that a lot more studies would be conducted by the agency to bring out more nutritional benefits in eating cocoyam.
