A political activist and founder of the Connected Development (Code) and Follow the Money, Mallam Hamzat Lawal, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari for an independent audit of ecological funds.

Lawal made the call on Thursday in Abuja while responding to questions on the sidelines of the Civic Engagement and Campaign Development for 25 emerging political leaders.

He lamented that the ecological funds have not been able to meet the mandate of Nigerians.

“Nigeria just came out of a flood that Killed many people and cost the nation millions of naira. I believe we need to audit ecological funds. We cannot say we have a government that came to office on the mantra of the anti-corruption campaign and they are not open to ensure they provide audits on the judicious use of public resources.

“This does not speak well of President Muhammadu Buhari led administration. I hope that he will call for an independent audit and give Nigeria information on what has happened to the monies in the ecological fund,” Lawal said.

Speaking about the event, Lawal said there is a big mentorship gap, and that he was delighted that his generation is curious about that and working to address it.

He said, “We are preparing to bridge the gap with the next set of leadership and also create an avenue where it can become a supportive system, collaborate and ensure our country and communities are proud.”
