CODE engages Abuja journalists on climate finance

Connected Development (CODE), a non-governmental organization dedicated to improving access to information and empowering communities across Africa, has hosted a discourse on climate finance in Abuja on Tuesday. 

The event brought together over 15 media professionals to discuss the findings of a recent report on climate finance in Nigeria.

CODE’s flagship initiative, FollowTheMoney, tracks government and international aid spending in the health, environment, and education sectors to promote transparency and ensure effective service delivery, particularly in underserved and rural areas.

As part of their strategic follow-up, CODE invited journalists, climate coalitions from civil society organizations (CSOs), government climate change experts, and other climate advocates to a “Media Discourse on Climate Finance in Nigeria.” The goal of the dialogue was to share insights, exchange ideas, and develop actionable recommendations to improve climate fund mobilization and utilization at both the national and sub-national levels.

The engagement aimed to showcase the growing impact of climate change on vulnerable communities. 

CODE’s Acting CEO, Ms. Hyeladzira James Mshelia, unveiled the key research findings on Nigeria’s climate finance from 2015 to 2021. The report highlights the nation’s climate vulnerability and funding needs, revealing a substantial finance gap that hinders effective climate action. 

Mshelia called on the media to play a crucial role in closing this gap through public awareness campaigns and investigative reporting to expose financial gaps and ensure accountability.
