Journalists have been urged to adapt with technological advancement and have a good mastering of data journalism if they are to remain relevant in the profession.

A facilitator with Code for Africa, Okwuone Nkechi made this known during a data journalism training for some selected Daily Trust journalists in Abuja. 

The training which is expected to intermittently span a nine-months period  was organised by Code for Africa in partnership with Google News Lab and the World Bank Institute.

She said a good mastering of data journalism would aid information gathering and presentation in line with global best practices considering the changing media landscape.

She said the essence of the training was to build the digital skills and capacity of journalists in line with the demands of the profession in the 21st century.

“The newsrooms have to follow the trend and who are the newsroom if not the journalists,” she said.

Daily Trust’s Managing Editor, Theophilus Abbah said Daily Trust partnered with Code for Africa on Data Journalism to train journalists on data journalism, now that this genre of reporting is taking the centre stage all over the world.

He said 24 journalists would be trained on data journalism including advanced search, public data explorer and drone journalism while he urged the participants to put what they have learnt to use in their reportorial duties.
