Teachers in colleges of education have been accused of collecting money from students to better their grade.
The Director of Audit, College of Education, Akwanga, Nasarawa State, Barnabas Abdu, made the accusation while delivering a paper titled: “The Role of Public Relations Officers in Curbing Corruption in Colleges of Education,” during the 20th annual general meeting of committee of public relations executives and information officers of colleges of education in Nigeria, held in Abuja.
He said that Nigerian colleges were shadows of their past selves academically. “Academic performance is not taken seriously anymore,” he said. “It is an open secret that students are occasionally compelled to pay for grades in colleges of education.”
He said that students were victimised by corrupt and unethical lecturers, adding that female students were forced to compromise their integrity  to pass examination.
In his address, the Executive Secretary, National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE), Professor Bappa-Aliyu Muhammdu, said that quality teacher education could be achieved through cooperation of stakeholders in education sector.
