The Nigeria Integrated Water Resources Management Commission (NIWRMC) and the Kano State Water Board (KSWB) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening water governance and improving sustainable water service delivery in the country.

According to a statement issued by Fatimah Yusuf, Head of Press and Public Relations at NIWRMC, the agreement was signed on Monday in Abuja.

Executive Director of NIWRMC, Dr. Abdulmumini Aminu-Zaria, said the partnership underscores the importance of collaboration between federal and state institutions in managing water resources effectively. He noted that working together would help ensure that water abstraction, groundwater development, pollution control and overall service delivery are coordinated in line with the national framework for Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM).

Aminu-Zaria said the MoU would support the development of a reliable reporting system and help advance strategies that safeguard both the quantity and quality of water for current and future generations.

He explained that the NIWRMC had embarked on institutional reforms aimed at strengthening corporate governance and stakeholder engagement in the water sector. The partnership with the Kano State Water Board, he said, reflects a shared commitment to improving water allocation efficiency, ensuring compliance with national water regulations and enhancing transparency in water-use licensing.

“This MoU allows us to harmonise our regulatory mandate, streamline data exchange and jointly strengthen monitoring and enforcement mechanisms across Kano State’s water sector,” he said.

The executive director commended the leadership of the Kano State Water Board for embracing regulatory reforms, expressing confidence that the partnership would set a benchmark for other states and reinforce national efforts toward sustainable water resources management.

Responding on behalf of the Kano State Government, Commissioner for Water Resources, Haruna Umar Doguwa, said the state is committed to providing safe and reliable water supply to residents. He noted that cooperation with NIWRMC would support effective regulation of water sources and ensure that policies guiding water management are strengthened through the MoU.
