The Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Nomadic Education (NCNE), Prof. Bashir Usman, has appealed to the Kaduna State government and others across the country to help enrol the 3.5 million nomadic out of school children into school.

He also urged the government to provide adequate teachers and infrastructure for Nomadic Primary Schools.

He made the appeal while declaring open a 3-day capacity development workshop on skills acquisition and sustainable livelihood for nomadic youth drawn from Borno, Cross River, Enugu, Gombe, Kaduna, Kebbi and Oyo states in Kaduna.

Represented by the Director, Quality Assurance, Mr. Akin Akinyosoye, Usman said 130 nomadic youth will be equipped with various skills in a bid to ensure sustainable livelihoods especially as it affects nomadic children.

“The commission decided to imbibe relevant livelihood skills on the youth which play a key role in providing food security and income to millions of families and their communities,” he said.

While stressing that the initiative of empowering the youths through skills acquisition of livelihoods can go a long way in reducing poverty, restiveness and other social vices such as cattle rustling, kidnapping, rape and rural banditry, he called on the federal government to be more determined in ensuring that all 3.5 million out-of-school nomadic children are enrolled in schools.

Speaking, the Director of Extension Education and Skills Development, NCNE, Dr. Abdu Ardo, said the training is expected to build the capacities of the nomadic youth so as to organise themselves to utilize and transfer the new knowledge to their community members.

He said it was to also develop a local action plan on the implementation of the acquired skills for sustainable livelihood among the trainees in their localities.
