Preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Championships received a boost as the Nigerian Fencing Federation leveraged the platform of Invest Lagos 3.0 to promote the continental significance and developmental impact of the tournament.
The federation was represented at the high-profile investment summit by its Vice President, Mrs. Rachael Samuel, who highlighted the opportunities the championships present for sports development, infrastructure growth, and international collaboration.
Organised by the Lagos State Government in conjunction with the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council (CWEIC), Invest Lagos 3.0 brought together government officials, investors, diplomats, policymakers and business leaders to discuss strategies for driving economic growth and strengthening global partnerships.
Among dignitaries present were CWEIC Chairman Lord Jonathan Marland, Chief Executive Officer Samantha Cohen, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat and the Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade and Investment, Mrs. Folashade Ambrose-Medebem.
For the Nigerian Fencing Federation, the gathering provided an opportunity to place sports at the centre of conversations on investment and development while creating awareness ahead of the Commonwealth Fencing Championships, which Lagos will host for the first time.
Discussions surrounding the event focused on attracting strategic partnerships and sponsorships, developing sustainable sports infrastructure, expanding opportunities for young athletes and strengthening women’s leadership in sport.
The federation also highlighted plans to introduce disability fencing to a major international competition in Africa in partnership with World Ability Sport, a move aimed at promoting inclusivity and accessibility.
With preparations gathering pace, stakeholders believe the championships will not only elevate fencing in Nigeria and Africa but also demonstrate the power of sport as a vehicle for economic growth, social inclusion and lasting development.
