Members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) chapter, were sharply divided yesterday and engaged in struggle of supremacy on whether to suspend or continue with their ongoing strike.

A factional leader of the union, Comrade Iliya Abdulrrauf Bello, on Tuesday announced the suspension of the strike and directed members of the union to resume work immediately.

However, a national women leader of the union, Hadiza Kabir, yesterday said Bello has been expelled from the union, therefore doesn’t have the power to call any meeting or take decision on behalf of the union.

Hadiza vowed that the strike continues and the executive of SSANU would continue to enforce it.

Daily Trust’s correspondent witnessed an altercation among members of the union at the entrance of the university’s Senate.

Members loyal to the Bello faction were insisting that they should be allowed access to their offices for continuation of their routine duties, while the other faction loyal to the national SSANU vowed that no worker would be allowed to enter the building.

This caused anxiety in and around the main campus of the university.

The apprehension was compounded by the presence of security personnel in different parts of the university.
