Communities in Bauchi District have presented a best Humanitarian Award to Plan International and one of its partners, Community Initiative for Promotion Health and Education Sector (CIPRHES), for saving the lives of women and children through various interventions on maternal, newborn and child health in the state.

Speaking during the award ceremony, in his office, the District Head of Bauchi town who doubles as the Chiroman Bauchi, Alhaji Nuru Adamu Jumba, said Plan International played a significant role in enlightening child-bearing mothers to embrace antenatal services, hospital delivery and immunization.

The role has helped in reducing the rate of maternal and neonatal deaths as well as promotion of education not only in Bauchi town but across the state, he said.

“Plan International has provided Mom-Packs which consist of 28 items each to pregnant women in 44 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) for free to encourage hospital delivery of women in Bauchi and antenatal care.

“This intervention has impacted positively on women to embrace both antenatal and routine immunization of children which also reduced death of children,” he said.

 The royal father explained that death is inevitable but a majority of maternal deaths were caused as a result of ignorance and lack of necessary information, adding that the intervention of Plan International had changed the mentality of women.

“Today, many women have abandoned some unhealthy cultural and primordial practices because of the enlightenment campaign carried out by the partners.”

The traditional ruler noted that the awards was a collective decision of ward heads and village heads within the district as an appreciation of the community for humanitarian services and other support from Plan International and its partners for the change in the attitude of women and by extension restore development in the society.

Responding, the Program Coordinator Plan International in Bauchi, Muhammad Nasir Musa, thanked the district head for the award and pledged to redouble their support for the development of the people.

“The award will spur our efforts to continue to support the promotion of women and children’s health in Bauchi State and beyond,” he added.
