The communities comprising Ayamabele and Kalaba, made up of mostly farmers and fishermen, complained that the spill destroyed their environment and means of livelihoods.
In a petition dated June 30, 2014, and addressed to the Co-ordinator of Shell’s Kolo Creek office at Imiringi in Ogbia Local Government Area of the state, the communities lamented that Shell had yet to do the needful since the spill occurred.
The letter signed by the paramount rulers of Ayamabele and Kalaba communities,  Tamuno Monday and Orukali Roman, stated that the spill which occurred at Shell’s Okordia manifold in Ikarama “affected our swamp called Onwu-Onwu-Daba through its natural source.
“We hope this peaceful and most civilised approach to this heart-felt issue will be highly appreciated by you and the entire management of SPDC at large.
“Hence, we look forward to seeing a positive response to our legitimate demand for a safe and sustainable environment.”
