The Iree Community in Osun State has appealed to Governor Rauf Aregbesola to discard the idea of relocating the State Polytechnic from Iree or merging it with another institution in the state.
Addressing a press conference on behalf of indigenes of Iree community leaders, Alhaji Fasasi Olatoke said that the appeal became necessary with the indication that the governor planned to merge the state owned tertiary institutions due to paucity of funds.
He noted that the fear of the community was justifiable considering the recommendation of the educational summit in the state that was chaired by Professor Wole Soyinka which recommended only one polytechnic for the state.
He said “If the governor continues with his plan, thousands of youths would be deprived of access to affordable education and this may lead to insecurity, disrupt socioeconomic and commercial activities in the community.”
Also, the President of Iree Progressive Association, (IDA) Ahaji Yekini Oyedele and the Asiwaju of Iree, Chief Adenrele Afolabi pleaded with Aregbesola not to tamper with the location of the polytechnic.
Fasasi maintained that the policy was contrary to Governor Aregbesola’s six point agenda and promises, urging the governor to rethink and allow Osun State Polytechnic to sustain in status.
