Residents of Gunduwawa community in Gezawa local government area of Kano state have called on the local government authority to come to their aid through provision of classrooms and furniture to a community school in the area, Madarasatul Sabilil Salam Islamiyyah.
A resident of the area, who spoke on behalf of the community, Malam Iliyasu Umar Gunduwawa, said the Islamiyyah school had over 1, 200 students but with single classroom block.
“I can tell you, lessons are being taken in the open space and the school normally closes during rainy season. The school is a product of the community’s effort and since its establishment the students have been studying in the open. We have tried to get even a temporary shelter for the students, but our efforts did not yield any positive results because majority of us are low income earners. We are appealing to authorities at local and state levels as well as private sector and individuals to come to our aid by providing classrooms to the school,” Iliyasu said.
Another resident, Malam Ibrahim Burga said the community was worried about the condition of the school as rainy season was approaching and that if nothing was done before the rain, the school would be left with no option than to suspend its activities till after the rainy season.
“We need an urgent assistance for our children to continue with their Islamic studies. This is our priority for now and we seek for every well-meaning Nigerian to support us in this regard,” Burga said.
