Community policing will enhance intelligence gathering-Bello

Yahaya Bello.

Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello has said that the idea of community policing which seeks to involve locals in the maintenance of law and order would further enhance intelligence gathering and stem insecurity.

The State government recently Inaugurated its state community policing committee in a move geared toward improving security in communities across the state.

Speaking on the initiative on Friday in Lokoja, the Deputy Governor, Mr Edward Onoja said the gesture marks a turning point in re-stategising and rethinking the security architecture using community policing initiative as proposed by the Inspector General of Police, Mr Muhammad Adamu.

He said a citizen-centric approach to tackling crime and criminally was necessary in order to make policing effective through intelligence-based initiative anchored on mutual trust between the citizens and the police.

According to him, the current policing model has failed to engage members of the local communities and neighborhood in knowledge sharing and intelligence gathering that can help in nipping crimes in the bud.
