To revive the declining reading culture in Nigeria, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Youth With a Vision (YWAV), has launched a reading competition centered on the book titled: “Readers are Leaders”.

The competition brought together students from 20 schools across Lagos State, showcasing their literary talents and intellectual prowess expected of Nigeria’s future leaders.

The Chairman of the occasion, Cosmas Maduka, a philanthropist and President of the Coscharis Group, lauded the effort of Dr Elvis Ukpaka, President of YWAV, for his pivotal role in organising the competition.

Maduka emphasised the transformative power of reading, stating that the only way one could develop as a leader was by reading.

He noted that, “It challenges you to see things from others’ perspectives and fosters a desire to make a difference.”

He acknowledged the obstacles hindering reading culture such as poverty and lack of time, but urged individuals to prioritise reading for personal development despite the challenges.

Reflecting on the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Maduka noted: “Even though AI is there to help us, it’s about asking the right questions.”

He criticised the government’s allocation to education, saying it’s one of the reasons behind the drop in educational standards.

He said, “You cannot give what you don’t have. When we find a leader who is a reader, they will insist on and improve on education.”

Dr Ukpaka shared his journey of transformation through reading, illustrating the potential impact of mentorship and guidance.
