There was a mild drama when the deputy chairman of the conference Prof. Bolaji Akinyemi, who was presiding, said security should escort the delegate Mrs Asabe Baba Nahaya out of the hall.
Asabe is former national president of Nigerian Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) and she is representing that organization in the conference.
The confusion started when Chief Mike Ahamba raised alarm saying a lady “without tag was sitting in the hall and she was rude to me when I spoke to her.”
He said that she was not sitting in her designated seat. But immediately after Ahamba finished, Asabe took over the microphone and said Ahamba was being mischievous because “she was wearing a veil.”
She explained that Ahamba, who was sitting two rows behind where she sat, should have asked other delegates she was conferring with instead of raising hell.
It was at that time that Akinyemi said the delegate should leave the hall. This decision was not taken lightly by the female delegates, therefore the plenary became rowdy as Asabe moved and sat on her designated seat.
Other delegates mostly men were shouting that she must go out while women where saying no.
A lady delegate who spoke to this reporter said the ex NAWOJ president “was embarrassed because she’s a woman. Ahamba said she was rude to him when he spoke to her. This means that he wouldn’t have raised the unnecessary alarm if she smiled at him. That is the irony.”
“Male delegates displayed worst misconduct here with some of them shouting on the leadership of the conference but nothing was done. It is the usual men ego thing as you can see.’’
