Nigeria’s representatives at the CAF Confederations Cup, Rivers United have defeated South Africa’s side Bloemfontein Celtic with a 5-0 on aggregate yesterday in what is Nigeria’s biggest win ever in the competition.
It will be recalled that the second leg was scheduled to take place on Wednesday, 6 January but was postponed after new COVID-19 restrictions did not allow Celtic to travel down to Nigeria.
Celtic entered the second leg trailing Rivers United by two goals conceded in South Africa and needed to upturn the results.
However, Rivers United signalled their intent early on when Godwin Aguda opened the scoring in the first half, making it 3-0 on aggregate for the hosts at the neutral ground, Stade Charles de Gaulle, Porto-Novo, Benin.
Celtic’s fate was virtually sealed just before the halftime break when Aguda bagged his second goal of the game to hand his side an insurmountable lead.
The Port Harcourt based club put daylight between the sides to secure a spot in the next round when Fortune Omoniwari’s struck five minutes after the halftime break to make it 3-0.
Rivers will now lock horns with fellow Nigeria Professional Football League outfit Enyimba in the next round.
The People’s Elephant will host the Pride of Rivers in the first leg in Aba on February 14, while the reverse fixture takes place a week later in Port Harcourt on February 21, 2021.
