Police investigators said the woman killed her husband because the man had planned to take a second wife. “My reason for pouring chemical acid on my husband when he was sleeping in our bedroom was simply to teach him a lesson of a life-time, I did not plan to kill him, it was satan that pushed me to do it,” said Mrs Beatrice with eyes soaked with tears at the Ogun State police command headquarters, Elewe-Eran recently as she was being questioned on the circumstances that led to the death of her husband. The image-maker of the command, Mr Muyiwa Adejobi (DSP) who confirmed the story to our reporter, stated that the police swung into full scale investigation and got to the very root of the incident. He told Oodua Trust that the case is a primae facie case of murder and that the suspect would have been charged to court if not for the strike action embarked upon by the Ogun state arm of the judiciary.
Mrs Safiu was arrested and quizzed by the police in connection with the tragic death of her husband, Mr Oluwatoyin Safiu, a business mogul who specialized in haulage.
According to police’s first information report, “acid was poured on the deceased while he was sleeping on his matrimonial bed. While neighbours suspected foul play, his wife who was the only eye-witness of the ‘purposed robbery’ incident maintained that it was the handiwork of armed robbers. She tried very hard to convince sympathizers that the robbers who invaded their house were responsible for the dastardly act.”
The report added that when the case was reported to the police and during the course of investigation, Mrs Safiu confessed to the crime. “She told any one who cared enough to listen that she was provoked beyond control because of the recent misunderstanding which she had with her husband over his second wife.”
Sources close to the family but who declined to be named told our correspondent that the couple met while they were both undergraduates at the University of Ibadan. The sources maintained that things have not been so easy for Mrs Safiu who is from Abia state and her husband, who is from Ogun state, alleging that the woman was sent out of her matrimonial house for over 10 years due to constant bickering by the couple.
Oodua Trust learnt that it took the intervention of extended family members and the five children of the couple before they were eventually reconciled. Meanwhile, Mr. Safiu was said to have remarried to one Mrs. Isiwat Safiu who bore him two children, during the four years that his first wife, the accused left him.
The couple who until the incident lived in their expansive house at Igoro Ehunsa OPIC Extension, Agbara Estate, Ogun State, had five children.
In a mourning mood, Mrs. Beatrice who could not hold back tears, said it was Satan that pushed her into pouring acid on her husband who has been taking good care of her and her children.
The police spokesman, Mr Adejobi said that the suspect had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) pending her trial in a competent court of law.
