Consider agric potentials for economic diversification – FG urged

The Strategy Manager, Novus Agro Limited, Mrs. Obiajuru Luya, said at a press conference in Lagos that paying attention to agriculture with adequate funding becomes imperative to save Nigeria from economic downturn due to international crude oil crashes.
According to her, with the activities of an indigenous firm such as Novus Agro, more youths have become agro entrepreneurs.
She said these young people however need encouragement from the federal government through right policies and friendly business climate to fully unleash their potentials in agric.
She explained that the company is complementing efforts of the government in the agricultural sector through keeping a farmers database and provision of updates on commodity prices across the country.
Luya said Novus Agro serves as platforms linking farmers and processors thereby making it easy for sales of farm produce.
She said the company’s activities have also aided stability of prices of agricultural commodities in the country.
Luya said: “Since inception, Novus Agro has continued to pioneer the use of technology and information to solve critical agricultural value chain challenges. Our model is based on the use of a highly trained network of field agents and our proprietary mobile technology platform to provide a last-mile connection between rural farmers and markets.”
The head, Business Development, Novous Agro, Mr. Ibrahim Buwanhot, explained that the firm had been able to collect commodity price data nationally and continuously in 50 markets for over four years.
He stated that the company is also involved in training of farmers on best practices in production and handling.
