Speaking at the opening of a two-day working retreat of the committee in Lagos, Mark explained that the   retreat would have taken place in Abuja, but was changed to Lagos to avoid unnecessary distractions.
“Neither me nor any Senator has a fixed position on various issues raised by members during various public hearing regarding grey areas in the constitution. Objectivity of the Senate since the beginning of the constitution in 2012 still stands,” the Senate President said.
He reminded members of the committee that its final report would still be subjected to exhaustive debates.
Senator   Mark emphasized that the core issues that Nigerians are agitatingfor like State Police, NYSC, Land Use Act, State Creation, Indigeneship/ Citizenship including other  vital issues shall be debated thoroughly before any amendment can be made.
Also speaking,   Deputy Senate President and Chairman of the Constitution Review Committee, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, said the committee has not taken any position on any issue which arose from the public hearings held across the country, adding that   “the committee has no such power.”
Ekweremadu said the committee’s second working retreat was to tidy up and translate the inputs the committee got from members of the public and critical stakeholders into a working document for the Senate.
“We have worked hard to accommodate the views and inputs of Nigerians in ways both traditional and innovative. This is to ensure that the end product is representatives of the yearnings and aspirations of the overwhelming populations of Nigerians and can also stand the test of time,” Ekweremadu said.
