The construction industry and   government at all levels have been urged to discourage over-dependence on imported construction materials and imbibe the use of locally available construction materials.

This was contained in a communiqué issued by the Nigerian Building & Road Research Institute (NBRRI) at the end of it conference on “Emerging materials and technologies for sustainable building and road infrastructure” organized in collaboration with stakeholders in the construction industry  recently in Abuja.

The conference discussed emerging innovative materials and technologies in building and road infrastructure.

The communiqué also called for the replacement of Portland cement in construction in Nigeria with Pozzolana from agro and industrial waste which are abundant in Nigeria, to help address global warming concerns resulting from the emission of greenhouse gases.

The communiqué reads in part, “Professionals in the built environment sector should incorporate an energy efficiency approach in the design and implementation of construction projects in tune with the theme of the conference: emerging materials & technologies for sustainable building & road infrastructure.”
