Indeed it is only in Nigeria that someone who is doing well is being stampeded out of the Senate. The reference by Dr Okpe that in the United States, where we borrowed the presidential system of government, that serving senators spend upward of 37 years to 40 years once they are performing, is a watershed.
It should not be a fashion for anyone who has occupied the Government House as governor to head straight to the Senate even when the incumbent senator is still very popular and has performed.I was impressed when Governor of Cross River State Liyel Imoke said he was not going for any elective post after his tenure expires next year. That is how it should be.
There is need to institutionalize our democratic norms and system by sustaining good legislative process and encouraging those legislators who have made a mark in the legislature by giving them a nod to continue.
Enugu State should not be an exception. Senator Ekweremadu as Deputy Senate President has remained very visible and active on the floor of the Senate, at his ECOWAS parliamentary work and in his constituency where there is no iota of doubt of his having touched the lives of his constituents.
