Now this may get a little too technical but don’t be overwhelmed. When starting from rest the drive is taken up automatically by a centrifugal clutch which in turn drives two pulleys through a bevel reduction gearbox.

The pulley diameters are varied according to their speed by centrifugal weights, and according to throttle position by a vacuum chamber. Two toothed V-belt run to two rear pulleys, which are pressed together by springs.

Here is the main trick at small throttle opening; the system automatically uses a high gearing for economic fuel consumption.

We should remember that higher gearing consumes less fuel. At full throttle it drops down to a lower gear for quick acceleration and later to its higher gear.
