Contractor charged with alleged theft of N4.3m

A 46-year-old contractor, who allegedly forged a Lagos State Tenders Board document, was yesterday charged to court with stealing N4.325 million.

The police charged the defendant, Abiodun Lawal, before an Igbosere, Lagos, chief magistrate court on a four-count criminal charge of false representation, stealing and forgery.

According to police Superintendent Francis Igbuusa, Lawal committed the alleged offences between February 2018 and September 2019 at Olaniyi Street, Aguda, Ogba, Lagos State.

The accused person was alleged to have obtained the N4.325million sum from Alhaji Bayo Yakub on the false representation that he was on the verge of securing a Lagos State Government Hospital Renovation contract, a representation he knew to be false.

It was also alleged that Lawal, on September 7, 2019, knowingly forged a Lagos State Government Tenders Board document for contract award No. CON. 41/2009/164 purportedly signed by one J. O.  Odupitan with intent that it may be used or acted upon as genuine to the prejudice of Alhaji Bayo Yakub, Lagos State  Government and members of the public.

The police alleged that he also fraudulently used the forged document for contract award No. CON. 41/2009/164 dated 7th September, 2019 and purportedly signed by one J. O. Odupitan, “which is a false document”, by presenting it to Alhaji Bayo Yakub as evidence of the contract awarded to him by the Lagos State Government.

Lawal pleaded not guilty to all the four counts and was admitted to bail in the sum of N200,000, with two sureties.

The chief magistrate, M. A. Agbaje, fixed trial for Wednesday March 18, 2020.
