The Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON) has announced the creation of a new register to formally recognise and regulate other key players in the building industry, including building technologists, technicians, and craftsmen.

Speaking at a news conference on Friday in Abuja, CORBON Chairman, Dr Samson Opaluwah, said the initiative aimed to promote professional growth, ensure quality control, and enhance career development for the cadres within Nigeria’s construction sector.

Opaluwah noted that while more than 4,000 builders had been registered since CORBON’s establishment under Decree 45 of 1989, the support personnel they worked with, such as craftsmen and technicians, had not previously been formally recognised.

He emphasised that the professionals played critical roles on construction sites and deserved proper recognition and inclusion within the regulatory framework of the building industry.

“These building technicians and artisans form the bulk of private sector practitioners. Unfortunately, they’ve lacked proper recognition and opportunities for growth. That’s about to change,” he said.

He explained that the new register, approved at the last council meeting, aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and introduced a framework for regulating and certifying all practitioners on building sites.
