President of COREN Engineer Kashim Ali stated this when he paid a courtesy call on the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, in Abuja.
 Explaining while it is difficult to track down and prosecute the fake engineers, he said, “Some of them go to the extent of forging COREN certificates and brazenly present such forged certificates to tender for Engineering jobs. Engagement of such quacks has always led to colossal loss of lives and properties in the areas of collapsed buildings and other infrastructural facilities.”
He therefore appealed for the collaboration of ICPC   to fight the menace of quackery bedeviling the engineering profession.
“I wish to acknowledge the effort of the Commission in the creation of links with other government institutions by creating anti-corruption units in federal ministries and parastatals. COREN sincerely solicits the support of the Commission and indeed that of all well-meaning Nigerians in the great task of sanitizing the engineering practice in this country.”
The COREN President said that over 80 percent of government spending is on engineering project and as such engineering personnel should be engaged in executing them.
“It therefore follows that engineers in the public service and the private sector will always be involved in the implementation of these projects. The quality of engineers handling these projects is therefore very critical to the development of infrastructure in the country.
“To this end, council has registered 15,713 engineering personnel and consulting firms, made up of 11,393 engineers, 1340 engineering technologists, 295 engineering technicians, 1,474 engineering craftsmen, 433 expatriates and 778 consulting firms,” he said.
