Cornerstone Insurance Plc Foundation and FIN Insurance Company have gifted 200 English and Mathematics textbooks to a secondary school in Abuja.
Presenting the books to Model Secondary School, Maitama, Abuja, the Coordinator of the Foundation, Cordelia Ekeocha, said the gesture was part of the Cornerstone’s 2017 Corporate Social Responsibility tagged “Bookathon.”
The school was one of the 10 schools across Abuja, Lagos and Port Harcourt that were gifted 2000 books.
Ekeocha said the book donation was borne out of the need to equip school libraries with basic academic and educational materials and boost students’ academic performances in both Mathematics and English exams at State and National levels.
“Research shows that the current economic crisis in Nigeria has had an observable negative impact on the education sector; as many State Governments continue with drastic budget cuts on basic infrastructure in both Junior and Senior Secondary Schools,” she said.
The Acting Managing Director of FIN Insurance, Ademola Abidogun, said his company keyed into the gesture to improve students’ performance in English and Mathematics at the secondary school level.
Abidogun said the gesture would be expanded in future to include some additional science subjects with the overall goal of building young scientists that will move Nigeria forward.
The Vice Principal of the school, Robert Job Order, received the books on behalf of the school management.
Order said there were some students in the school who had no English and Mathematics textbooks and the books would be distributed to such students.
The Head Boy of the school, Raphael Collins, assured that the books would not gather dusts on the shelves as the students have good reading culture.
Collins pleaded with the Foundation and FIN Insurance to sustain the good gesture as it will benefit the poor.
The representative of the Head Girl, Chioma Ukoha, expressed happiness with the development, saying it will improve the schools performance in English and Mathematics in key national exams.
Ukoha said reading remains the only way students could pass their exams but most times, they are constrained by dearth of textbooks.
