There was news of confirmed case of coronavirus in Nigeria last week. The development has sent waves of shock or fear in the minds of Nigerians. Before the recorded case of the disease in Nigeria, coronavirus was  discovered in Wuhan province of China. However, the deadly disease has been speedily spreading into other countries namely: Japan, Italy and Iran. Sadly, Nigeria has now recorded its first case. The symptoms of the disease include: runny nose, pneumonia and fever. Director General, Centre for Disease and Control, Dr Chikwe Eheanzu, stated that concerted efforts are being put in place to detect the disease and stop the epidemic from further spreading.

The case of coronavirus has come at a wrong time when the country is battling with the outbreak of Lassa fever. Nigerians need to worry about the emerging case of coronavirus for two or more reasons. First, the disease has no cure and can be contacted through mingling with the people who have been infected. This rises fear in our markets, parks, institutions and social gatherings. Secondly, our deteriorated health sector which is not well equipped cannot provide an emergency response to the victims. I have read in national dailies that the affected Italian national has bitterly complained about the poor condition of the Lagos Isolated Centre he was kept in. It was reported that he had attempted to run from the Centre due to the poor facilities.

With the recorded case of the disease, there is the need for government to embark upon preventive measures. This calls for screening in our air ports, and seaports, aggresive sensitisation campaign, free distribution of face mask and sanitisers. Our health personnel should also be on the red alert. These measures will go along way to prevent spreading of the disease. Coronavirus is a global epidemic, and has received global attention. It is learnt, the world health organization(WHO) is developing vaccines that will combat the disease. This is a timely and good response. Nigeria and other affected countries want to live in a coronavirus-free world. Yes, we will surely live!
