The Lagos State Government said it has established 27 sampling centres across the 20 local government areas of the state, as part of measures to contain the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

In a post on its official Twitter handle: @followLASG, the state government urged Lagos residents with any suspected COVID-19 symptoms to visit any of the centres closer to them to drop their samples for testing.

Out of the 27 centres, Alimosho LGA gets six sampling centres, being the largest local government area in the state.

The state’s Commissioner for Health, Prof Akin Abayomi, had in a remark, said that the strategy is geared towards bringing COVID-19 testing opportunity closer to the people as well as taking work strain off health workers who visit several local governments for case search and sample collection.

According to him, the new arrangement provides an opportunity for people with symptoms of COVID-19 at the local government to present themselves early for testing, adding that it will enable the state to halt community spread of the virus.

“They are not testing stations, they are sampling stations and if you meet the criteria for testing, you will be able to receive the counsel of the staff and your sample will be taken,” the Commissioner said.

Prof. Abayomi added wearing of face masks does not protect against COVID-19 infection but rather protects people around an infected person from an increased amount of aerosol generated from coughing or sneezing.

He also disclosed ongoing plans by the state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to start mass production of locally made face masks from standard designs recommended to them, saying the governor had already directed that tailors and seamstresses should be commissioned for the project.

He charged residents to report symptoms of COVID-19 infection to the government through the dedicated toll-free helplines – 08000CORONA.

Daily Trust reports the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Sunday reported 86 new cases of coronavirus, thus taking the total number of confirmed cases in Nigeria to 627.

Lagos alone recorded 70 out of the 86 new cases on Sunday.

Daily Trust Online had exclusively reported that the index case in Borno state – a retired anesthetic nurse working with an international organisation in Pulka town of Gwoza LGA – died of COVID-19 related symptoms.

A total of 170 people have been treated and discharged, nationwide. Twenty-one people have died from the virus.
