A canoe accident has claimed the life of a National Youth Service
Corps (NYSC) member serving in Bauchi state, Joseph Adebayo.
The deceased died few days to his passing out.
Adebayo from Ogun state and a graduate of Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro,
drowned into a dam after a canoe they were travelling in at Gubi Dam,
located few kilometers from Bauchi metropolis capsized.
An NYSC Zonal Inspector, Mahadi Habila Sada disclosed that the corps
members went out for picnic at Gubi Dam to celebrate the end of their
service year.
He said that three of the corps members entered a canoe which scooped
water and capsized in the middle of the dam, resulting to the death of
one of them, while the reaming two were rescued.
Confirming the incident, Bauchi State Police Command’s Public
Relations Officer, DSP Kamal Datti Abubakar said the victim died on
Thursday evening.
He, however, disclosed that, two of the corps members were rescued by
local fishermen, but unfortunately Adebayo drowned and died.
DSP Abubakar informed that his corpse was recovered at about 8 am at
the Dam the next day and had been deposited at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa
University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH) mortuary.
The Police PPRO said the Command was investigating the circumstance
leading to his death.
