The Anambra State Police Command yesterday said it has recovered a decomposing corpse of a woman suspected to have been murdered in Amawbia, Awka South Local Government Area of the state.

The police also said the husband of the woman has been arrested for questioning on circumstances leading to the death of his wife.

A statement by the command’s spokesman, SP Haruna Mohammed on Sunday stated that “On the 26/3/2020 at about 8:30am, a distress call was received by the Central Police Station Awka that unusual odour was perceived by the neighbours oozing out from the room of one Ikechukwu Atansi at Chimas House Ezimezi, Amawbia in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State  and that flies were seen hovering all over the premises”.

He said following the report, police patrol team led by DPO Central Police Station Awka, CSP Chucks Nwoke, rushed to the scene, opened the door and discovered a decomposing body of a woman who was later identified as Mrs Uchechi Atansi, 31, from Enugwu-Agidi, in the room.

Mohammed said after careful analysis of the scene by police detectives, marks of violence were observed on the body of the victim and blood spilled all over the room.

He also stated that the photographs of the victim as well as the scene were taken and the corpse was removed and deposited at Amaku General Hospital mortuary for autopsy.

He further added that the victim was confirmed dead by a medical doctor.

The police spokesman said surprisingly, the husband of the deceased, one Ikechukwu Atansi, 49, of Umudum village in Isuanochia was right inside the room with the deceased when the door was opened and could not give a satisfactory account of what actually transpired.

According to Mohammed, instead, the husband claimed that he was injected with a substance by unknown persons who according to him must have killed his wife.

Mohammed said the Commissioner of Police, John Abang, has ordered the immediate transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Awka for discreet investigation.
