Making the remark at Moniya on Wednesday, the Chairman of Akinyele Local Government Council in Oyo State, Mr. Olusegun Emmanuel Olayiwola, appealed to the Federal Government to have a rethink over the modalities of payment of salaries of primary school teachers, just as he stressed the need for the federal authorities to shoulder the responsibility to pave way for increased development at the grassroots.

“If the Federal Government can be magnanimous as to the responsibility of funding primary school education, the problem of local government councils is over,’’ the council chairman stated.

Olayiwola who was recently voted Best Performing Local Government Chairman in Nigeria by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) in Abuja,made these observations  in his council secretariat  at a special interactive and feedback from stakeholders session, a constituency cultivation stewardship programme, organised by the Justice Development and Peace Commission (JDPC).

While expressing concern that meaningful developments would continue to elude the grassroots unless the deduction of teachers’ salaries were  stopped from council allocations, he noted with concern that virtually all the 774 local governments nationwide were  currently groaning over the monthly deductions of teachers’ salary from their federal allocations.

Specifically, he said, “in Oyo State alone, about N1.1billion are being deducted from the state joint Local Government Account monthly to pay the primary school teachers’ salaries and allowances.’’
