The team was mandated to engage the services of independent consultant whose bill would be footed by the Federal Ministry of Water Resources to ensure a speedy implementation of its assignment.
This was contained in communiqué issued at the end of the weeklong National Council on Water Resources organized by the Federal Ministry of Water Resources in partnership with Kaduna State government.
The Council meeting which was chaired by the Hon. Minister of Water Resources, Mrs Sarah Reng Ochekpe, has also solicited collaboration between federal and state governments as enshrined in the National Policy of Water Supply and Sanitation to ensure early compilation of all water resources projects.
The Council also approved the setting up of inter-ministerial committee with ministers from Water Resources, Environment, Health, Finance and other relevant agencies and state to work out modalities for preparation and development of the 2014 High Level Meeting (HLM) and prompt compilation of Global Analysis and Assessment of Sanitation and Drinking-Water reports, adding that the existing Sanitation Policy and Hygiene be harmonised to produce a single and acceptable National Policy that will provide effective framework for programme delivery.
The Council stressed the need for Nigeria to attain nationwide Open Defecation Free (ODF) status by 2015, calling on local government and communities to embrace the Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) approach and commit funds towards its achievement.
It also approved reviewing the draft policy on water resources, suggesting that all aspects of water resources development, including climate change, be reflected in the final policy document.
The council has also approved that states government should adopt the Public Private Partnership approaches for the development, operation and maintenance of water infrastructure.
On capacity building, the council approved that state water providers should cooperate with National Water Resources Institute in order to help in fulfilling the mandate to carry out staff training.
