The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria has enjoined newly inducted graduates of nursing science from foreign universities to prioritize the interests of Nigerians and willingly serve the country, particularly in areas with significant health care needs, such as hard to reach communities.
The acting registrar of the council, Ndagi Alhassan, gave the advice during the council’s 14th induction ceremony for 365 foreign-trained nurses in Abuja, on Tuesday.
He said the inductees had passed the May 2025 professional examination for general nurses.
He said the nurses graduated from 15 foreign institutions and had their adaptation program in 10 Nigerian universities offering bachelor of nursing science degree program.
The registrar said the nurses were trained in Cameroon, Ghana, India, Philippines, Cyprus, Sudan, Turkey, Egypt, Iran, China, Georgia, Kenya, Liberia, and Uganda among others.
He said, “I encourage you to be exemplary ambassadors of the nursing profession anywhere you appear, demonstrate humility, discipline and respect in your interactions with the public, let kindness and compassion guide your care for to all patients, practice within your score, in accordance with the highest ethical standards of the profession, and uphold the fundamental responsibilities of a practice of a professional nurse, wherever your career may take you. Always prioritize the well being of your patients, but remember to also care for yourself.”
He also enjoined the inductees to embrace the culture of lifelong learning, explore opportunities available for self development, acquisition of higher degrees and ascendancy in nursing profession.
Odibo Juliana , an inductee who emerged as the best graduating student from the six months adaptation program, enjoined foreign-trained nurses to keep working hard and resilient in the discharge of their duties.
A retired director of special duties at the council Yahaya Sunmi enjoined the foreign trained graduates to be mindful of professional collaboration and confidentiality of patient information.
