The Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) has enjoined universities and other training institutions in the country to uphold high academic, ethical and moral standards in the training of medical laboratory practitioners.
Registrar/CEO of the council, Prof Anthony O. Emeribe, made the call during the council’s second education workshop for training institutions, assessors and examiners among others in Abuja.
He said doing so will help the country to develop a pool of highly qualified and conscientious practitioners in the sector, adding that there is a correlation between the standard or quality of training in institutions across the country and the quality of manpower available to employers as well as the quality of service delivery available to patients
“It is, therefore, important that the institutions and council continue to work together to upscale the standard of training in the institutions for the good of the profession and the patients in particular,” Emeribe said.
He said the essence of the workshop is to bring stakeholders together to exchange ideas and explore ways of achieving council’s goals for the profession, adding that it is only when stakeholders are on the same page in respect of standards that progress can be made. The theme of the workshop ‘MLSCN Benchmark for Training Institutions Accreditation, Programme Assessment and Professional Examinations’, according to the registrar was chosen considering the imperative of availing institutions with enough knowledge and information regarding council’s accreditation process. Some of the facilitators include renowned academics such as Prof Vincent Ikeh of the University of Jos and Prof Vivian Ifeoma Enweani of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.
Emeribe said the council is determined to rid the profession of quacks and those who run substandard facilities, adding that the recent conviction of a fake medical lab scientist in Asaba, Delta State, should send a clear signal to nefarious elements operating illegally and risking the lives of unsuspecting patients.
