‘Countries with presidential system most corrupt, poorest’

Odumakin, a South West delegate at the conference, said this yesterday in his contribution during the committee’s sitting.
Citing Transparency International’s data, Odumakin said of the 19 poorest countries in the world, 15 are under presidential system of government.
He said Iraq and Pakistan though have parliamentary systems, are included for the fact that “they are in constant state of internal and external war. Iraq is also facing some economic embargoes that may put it in this position.”
He said of the 18 World Most Corrupt Countries, 14 have presidential systems. He explained that Iraq, Somalia and Libya are included in the list because “they are just coming out of a war situation.”
On the other hand, he said of the 20 World Least Corrupt Countries, 17 are practicing parliamentary system.
He said the presidential system in Nigeria gave birth to emperors as state governors and president, wanton corruption and excessive cost of governance.
Other members suggested semi-presidential system, semi-parliamentary, among others.
