A couple, Adeboye Adeyemo, 65, and his wife, Bolanle, 50, were on Thursday arraigned before a Mapo Grade A Customary Court in Ibadan for allegedly forging their marriage certificate.

They pleaded not guilty to a three-count charge of conspiracy, unlawful possession and forgery.

The prosecutor, Insp. Ayodele Ayeni, told the court that the offence was committed on March 20 at Mapo, Ibadan.

He alleged that Adeyemo forged the marriage certificate dated September 12, 2006.

Ayeni said the defendant later tendered the document as evidence in a divorce suit he filed against his wife.

Bolanle, however, opposed its admissibility, insisting that no marriage certificate was issued to them.

According to the prosecutor, investigations showed that the Ibadan North Local Government Registry, whose name appeared on the certificate, denied issuing it.

The offences, he said, contravene Sections 516, 465 and 430 of the Criminal Code, Cap 38, Vol. II, Laws of Oyo State, 2000.

The President of the court, Mrs S.M. Akintayo, granted the defendants bail in the sum of N200,000 each with two sureties.

She ruled that the sureties must be civil servants on Grade Level 12, present recent pay slips, and provide evidence of National Identification Numbers.

The case was adjourned to June 8 for hearing. (NAN)
