A couple, Mr and Mrs Chigozie Ezeofor, of No 26, Aunty Toyin Street, Kodeibo Estate, Ijegun Road, Isheri Oshun, Lagos, have been arrested for allegedly inflicting severe injuries on Blessing Joseph, their 19-year-old housemaid, by pouring hot water on her.

 The couple were arrested yesterday based on a report received from their neighbours.

  The neighbours, who did not wish to be named, said that they were encouraged to report the maltreatment by the decisive manner in which the Lagos State government and Lagos State police command have been handling similar cases of abuse.

 The Lagos State police public relations officer (PPRO), Chike Oti, who confirmed the arrest, alleged that apart from the couple’s maltreatment of the 19-year-old housemaid, the husband would often creep into the victim’s room when his wife was not around to make love to her.

  Oti said that Blessing Joseph, in her statement, wrote of how she had suffered terribly in the hands of the couple.

 According to the police spokesman, the girl narrated that her ‘madam’ Isioma Ezeofor, was always beating her up at the slightest provocation, while her husband Chigozie Ezeofor, was always harassing her sexually.

 In Oti’s words, “The exploitation came to a halt on Sunday, October 17, 2017 when Mrs Isioma Ezeofor’s temper got the better part of her and she emptied a kettle of hot water on the poor girl, scalding her skin in the process.

 “A good Nigerian who wished to remain anonymous called the police on the matter. Both husband and wife are being interrogated at the Gender Section of the Lagos State police command and would be charged to court at the end of the investigation.”
