Couple gets N3m bail over land scam

A couple was arraigned before a magistrates’ court sitting in Ilorin on Tuesday over a land scam.

The suspects, Faniyi Abidemi, 42, and Temitope Awoyemi, 26, were accused of criminal breach of trust and advance fee fraud.

The offences contravene sections 312 of Penal Code Law and 1(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud 2006.

The matter was reported by one Aduagba Kamaldeen in September 2021.

Kamaldeen alleged that Temitope approached him that her husband, Faniyi, has some portions of land at Gerewu area, Ilorin, for sale upon which she collected the sum of N7.2m

“In the course of interrogation, Temitope admitted to collecting the said money from the complainant on the instructions of her husband, Faniyi.

“Further investigation revealed that Faniyi lured his wife into the fraudulent act knowing that he did not have any portion of land for sale,” the first information report obtained from the police indicated.

The defence counsel, Barrister J.S. Muhammed, however, pleaded with the court to admit his clients to bail.

The presiding magistrate, Ibrahim Dasuki, granted the two suspects bail on the condition that they cough out the sum of N3m before leaving the court or else they should be remanded in the correctional facility.

He therefore adjourned the matter until December 6th, 2021 for further mention.
